Is Indian Society facing Moral crisis?

India is a country called as world’s largest democracy but, how appropriate is it to call it as largest democracy. Indian society has faced moral crisis ever since its independence in 1947. The constitution is based solely on the secular values and principles but no true secularism could be found throughout. Its not a mere personal opinion of a single individual frustrated of boredom due to ongoing covid-19 crisis, but its the unheard voice of over 250 Million people belonging to different religious minorities.

Religious intolerance was always there among the fringe elements of far right groups in India, but was limited to some extent until 2014 when a political party with far right extremist ideology came into power. This gave room to the extremist Hindutva goons to flourish in the society and they began to commit mob lynchings and threatening the minorities. The limit of bigotry was crossed when these hindutva goons started lynching people in the name of cow protection as they treat it as a holy animal. Many families lost their loved ones in Delhi riots in early 2020 due to Citizenship Amendment Act against which a massive population from all the communities arrived at Shaheenbagh Delhi and held protest against this new Law. We saw members of ruling party threatening the locals to vandalise their properties and rape their women if they weren’t stepping back from their anti-CAA narrative. Even bullets were fired at peaceful protestors by the volunteers of right wing extremist groups. Social media on one hand was trending with content against CAA and on the other hand people with extremist mentality unfurled hate speech against Muslim community over social media platforms by calling them traitors and threatening to act violently against them.

This was not sufficient that Covid-19 virus also hit the world and India was in the initial days of getting whirled into the first wave of the virus. A muslim organisation known as Tableeghi Jamaat due to some mis-management and miscommunication with local authorities held a religious gathering in one of the big mosques in New Delhi where many muslims from across the world joined the gathering the same way they used to meet in pre-pandemic days. In next few days few people from that religious gathering were identified infected with covid-19 and  Indian media (Also known as Godhi media) and right wing Hindu extremist groups like Bajrang Dal, VHP, etc. started targeting Muslim community for spread of covid-19 and stereotyped the community by the term Corona Jihad. This propaganda was run at a very high level. But when in April 2021 Maha kumbh Mela (Hindu Festival which includes Mass gathering) was held which proved to be a huge super spreader event for second dangerous wave of corona, Indian media which had already lost its credibility didn’t say a word against government for failing. A very few anchors from these news channels questioned the Government from that particular region where this super spreader event was held and got a plain reply from the political leaders of that region that it was not a super spreader event and should not be compared with the event of Tablighi Jamaat. This for sure was the height of Hypocrisy and bigotry.

In this year, India has been declared as a partial democracy and Indian government should be ashamed of this. Mainstream media is just a disgrace to the country as they did nothing but spread the hate and always kept raising communal tensions between Hindus and Muslims. At International level Indian media is nothing more than a meme for their hypocritical behaviour.

And I would conclude the topic here with a final line. Indians lost the India that everyone dreamt of during Declaration of Independence in 1947. All the sacrifices went in vain. Political system is corrupt and secular values have no place. And the Irony is that Comedians are doing true journalism and so called journalists are doing nothing but comedy. We for sure are facing moral crisis. We need to think of reforming our ties with other religions and create a peaceful environment, because that is what India was desired to be. No religions taught us violence and hatred, but its we humans who are responsible for everything. If not controlled today, we wont see tomorrow.

Hope the world recovers soon from the covid pandemic and we all will be back with a new energy leaving behind all our painful memories of 2020 and 2021.
